Dental sealants are a thin plastic layer that can be applied to the grooves of the back teeth which are used for chewing and help to effectively protect them against the effects of decay.
They are very effective in their ability to prevent germs, bacteria and subsequently decaying particles from penetrating the surface of the tooth.
Sealants are made from a material that is clear, white or naturally tooth coloured so they do not present in the mouth visibly, unless viewed in close detail.
They process of applying a sealant is a relatively straight forward one, with no drilling being required, and the entire procedure taking very little time to complete.
Sealants can be applied to the back teeth by use of a specialised gel which is placed initially to aid the cleaning of the underlying surface area. This is then removed and the sealant painted into the grooved area, where it is then set using a special light which helps assist the hardening process.
Sealants can last for as long as five to ten years and should be checked during regular dental checkups, to ensure that they remain intact and perform their function efficiently.
